THE CROSS IS IT A CHRISTIAN SYMBOL/SIGN? |  |
Within the world, which we live, the cross is universally accepted as the sign of Christianity. The concept of the cross being the symbol of Jesus Christ has in its very origins the acceptance of such by tradition. And the perpetuation thereof by mainline denominationalism through their overwhelming influence upon Christianity as a whole. However, is the cross really the sign of our precious Saviour? Would the early disciples have recognised it as such were they living to day? It is the opinion of the writer, that they would not recognise the cross as the symbol of Jesus Christ. So, if the cross is not the symbol of our blessed Saviour? What is His symbol? THE CROSS IS A CURSE! Galatians 3:13 "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us. For it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree, that the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Christ Jesus; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith." Nowhere does the Bible give any prominence to the cross in reference to its worship or construction, in fact, just the opposite is the case. Nor does it allude in any manner whatsoever to the fact that the cross is the sign of Jesus. It should be obvious that displaying or wearing a cross (crucifix) perpetuates the curse. Our question is this: To those who wear crosses - do they actually have the guts to go to Calvary? In fact, in ancient Egypt the cross (many variants) was in use as a symbol a thousand years before Jesus Christ. CAPITAL PUNISHMENT Understood in context, the method of capital punishment used by the Jews was stoning ("Now Moses, in the law, commanded us that such should be stoned..." Jn 8:5) - definitely not crucifixion! Jesus is the Messiah and was decidedly Jewish, and therefore, if anything, a stone should be the sign of Jesus. However, the Romans occupied Israel at the time of Jesus and Roman civil law demanded death by crucifixion. As barbaric as crucifixion was - it was an every day occurrence in the Roman world and there was nothing unique about it. "Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out saying, ‘crucify Him!’ Pilate said to them ‘You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him.’" (Jn 19:6) And elsewhere: "Then Pilate said to them, ‘You take Him and judge him according to your law.’ Therefore the Jews said to him, ‘It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,’ that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, signifying by what death He would die". (Jn 18:31-32) "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up..." (Jn 3:14) WHAT IS A SIGN? A sign is a symbol. A symbol identifies one with a person, product or system. For example: The Mercedes Benz is identified by a logo, which is circular with an inverted letter Y in the centre. There are literally thousands of branded products that are readily identified by their logo (sign). IS THERE A SIGN FOR JESUS? "Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven... Then the sign the Son of Man will appear in heaven..." (Matt 24:29-30) WHAT IS JESUS’ SIGN? I n all probability Jesus’ sign is a star. The following scriptures bear witness to this: "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His Star in the East..." (Matt 2:2) When they heard the King they departed; and behold the star... When they saw the star..." (Matt 2:7-10) "I see Him, but not now; I behold Him, but not near; a star shall come out of Jacob..." (Num 24:17) In the Revelation, Jesus is referred to as the ‘Bright Morning Star’.
